The Western Cordillera

Topography

The western cordillera is composed of large steep mountains that have not been damaged by erosion. These mountains contain river flows that flow from east to west, so the water deposits in the Gulf of Mexico, the Arctic Ocean, Hudson Bay and James Bay. However in the Rockies the river flows towards the west which deposits out into the Pacific Ocean.

Most of Western Cordillera’s beauty was made by the forces of erosion. When the glacier period was around the forces that controlled paths of storm did not give a single snow to the cordillera reign. Instead it got shifted into laurentia. This is why there were no glaciers. Had never flowed out to about million square miles into the lower country. Mountains themselves got ice gouged, scraped and smoothed and also this happens in the lower region. Canyons, waterfalls, and geysers share its youth with lakes, rivers, and water falls, things around it.

Western Cordillera has variety of vegetation. Goes from one side of the mountain to another. It really depends where you are in Western Cordillera. If you are in a place that’s moist or windward slopes the plants that grow there are Douglas fir, western hemlock, and red cedar. The Amazing thing is one the lower slope the Douglas fir and other plants grow tremendous age and even in size .There so big that they grow up to 30-story office building high. These are some of green plant’s that grow over moist places. On leeward (the side were the wind blows) it’s kind of wet but moistly dry. Plant’s that grow there are grasses and cacti. Also some are on dry valleys.

On the other side if you go to higher elevation the trees will become smaller. If the elevation is lower, than the growth of evergreens will become less, less and less because of precipitation. The top of the Western Cordillera (mountains) has been said it’s like a tundra. The conditions why it’s like a tundra is because all the icy, snowy and it’s always cold up there. Stays like this every time. When you go into the farther south there are no green plant's growing there because the rain fall is too low(less).

Climate
The climate of the western part of the cordillera is moist and mild but is influenced by the closeness of a large body of water. This is also known as maritime climate meaning the winters are usually above freezing and summers are cooler than in the interior of the continent.

As you can see during the winter months precipitation happens more however during the summer months precipitation decreases and temperatures are higher.

From this climograph you can see that temperatures reach far below zero and unlike Vancouver, precipitation occurs more during the summer months.

Evaluation: (36/50)
  • Represent the region in the following ways: (15/20)
    • Topography Some glaring errors... During the Ice Age, the Western Cordillera was also covered in snow but the tallest mountain peaks poked through the top.
    • Vegetation
    • Climate What body of water contributes to the mild climate?
    • Resources What resources does the region provide?
    • Important Cities
    • Things to Do A little thin on content here. What can you do in the Rockies or Coastal Mtns?
  • Provide at least one map of your region.(5/5) 2 good maps
  • Find appropriate images that represent various characteristics of your region.(7/10) Use more images to show what is in the region... You do not have even 1 photo of the Rocky Mountains. These are some of the most beautiful mountains in the world!!!
    • Make sure images are accompanied by captions.
  • Use climographs of areas in your region and explain how they illustrate the climate conditions.(5/5) 2 good climographs with brief explanations.
  • Explain how various aspects of the region will influence people visiting this land. (0/5)
